Course Title: URD 513 PRINCIPLES OF ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN

Aims: |
The content of this course provides an introductory approach for students to understand elements and principles of architectural design. Keeping in mind a student who wishes to gain a general knowledge about basic principles of architectural design and composition, multidisciplinary workshops in an integrated design studio environment will be used as a complementary part of the Active Learning process. |
Contents: |

The following issues will be considered throughout the course: |

|
The built environment, human interactions. Introduction to basic elements such as, movement, balance, rhythm, repetition, proportion, scale, sequence, color etc. |
|
Construction technology and architectural design. Essential elements of form and space. An interactive study of space for human needs. Design examples. |
|
Introduction to the short history of the physical and cultural contexts. |
|
Light, building materials, acoustics & psychological considerations. Building service systems, plumbing, electrical, vertical transportation, communication, security, fire protection, HVAC systems. |

Key Skills: |
Ability to work in an inter-disciplinary environment, analytical skills. |

Range and Structure of Course: |
The course consists of 56 working hours per semester. (28 hours for supervised study and classes, 14 hours for individual study, 7 hours for production and feedback, 7 hours for independent/group work). |

Teaching and Supervision: |
Reading, discussion, presentation, individual & group study, seminar, lecture, critique, workshop. |
|
|
Assessment: |
Students are expected to attend and participate in the interactive workshop sessions. Two Mid-Term examinations will be averaged and affect the grade by 50%. Final exam will be the 50% of the resulting grade. |
